The Detective Bureau is responsible for the follow-up and preparation for court presentations of all criminal incidents under the jurisdiction of the Sheriff.  Deputy Chief Dominic Iasparro is the commander of the bureau.

The Detective Bureau (DB) consists of eleven detectives, three of whom are assigned to the Machesney Park Division.  In addition to the detectives the bureau also has four deputies assigned to the Crime Scene Unit, whose duties include processing and collection of evidence.

One deputy is assigned to the Northern Illinois Auto Theft Task Force and three deputies are assigned to the Metro Narcotics Unit, which consists of Sheriff’s Deputies.

In addition to handling cases for the Sheriff’s Department detectives also assist smaller agencies in the county with follow-up investigations.  The Detective Bureau is also responsible for the registration and tracking of convicted sex offenders.  A rotating on-call schedule is maintained to ensure detectives are available twenty-four hours per day.  The Bureau is under the overall command of Chief Deputy Kurt Ditzler and Sheriff Richard A. Meyers.
