Evidence
The Evidence Section is responsible to ensure that the proper processes are in place to receive, maintain, and eventually obtain a final disposition of all items submitted as evidence or safe keeping.

This section also coordinates the timely auction of certain property when an owner cannot be located, such as found bicycles.  Questions concerning property and when the next auction will be can be directed to the evidence officer at 815-319-6550.

Impound
If a vehicle is impounded due to an arrest by the Sheriff’s Police or as an abandoned vehicle, the vehicle will be taken to the Greater Rockford Auto Auction, 5937 Sandy Hollow Road in Rockford. To retrieve an impounded vehicle, contact the Greater Rockford Auto Auction Impound Office at 815.874.7800 to determine the costs associated with the impounded car.

Basic* impound fees are:

• Towing fee $ 85.00 
• Impound fee $ 150.00
• Storage fee $ 24.00 per day  
• Release fee $ 69.00 if released during normal business hours.

When retrieving a vehicle from the impound lot, the person picking it up MUST:

• show a valid driver’s license
• show proof of valid insurance
• have the total cost of all fees in cash (exact amount only). 

No checks or credit cards are accepted and they cannot make change so you must have the exact dollar amount.

Should the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Police tow a vehicle for other reasons, you may contact the Sheriff’s Police Front Desk Deputy at 815.319.6300 to determine which towing agency has custody of your vehicle.
